Green Turf – A Century Old Swiss Horse Racing tradition
On a very warm and sunny September Sunday I attended quite the significant event in Dielsdorf, Switzerland (20 min from Zurich) – Green Turf Horse Racing (their website). Green Turf stands is a first class outdoor racing event with which boasts a unique racetrack and represents a hundred years of tradition of this sport art in Switzerland.
This year more than 9000 visitors attended the last race day of the season in Zurich Dielsdorf. Land Rover was the presenting sponsor of the event, allowing attendees to have a look at the latest models of their spacious cars during the break between races.
The program consisted of six horse and two pony races and prize presentations. I have never seen pony races before, so for me it was something totally new and amazing to see kids competing against each other on the racetrack on their tiny ponies. There were also lots of food stands, benches, and nicely decorated tables where one could enjoy drinking prosecco. Children could ride ponies or enjoy themselves at the playground. Some local artists presented their horses’ pictures, and owners of horse shops displayed their products for the horse lovers.
I found this event very relaxing and joyful as I personally love horses and enjoy watching them! I loved the jockeys’ colorful and unusual costumes. I also enjoyed being outdoors where I could admire lovely Swiss nature, and certainly and I liked the way the visitors were dressed; ladies in hats and dresses and men with elegant pants and jackets. It was a very noble, chic and pleasant event for summer.
