At the traditional “Lichterschwimmen,” hundreds of handmade lanterns are set afloat from Stadthausquai at exactly 6:00pm, creating a magical scene as they drift down the River Limmat. The lanterns are crafted each year by Zurich schoolchildren, who also have the honor of launching them onto the water.
This enchanting spectacle captivates both locals and visitors. Organized by Zürich Tourism in cooperation with the City’s Department of Education and Sport, it serves as a festive gesture of gratitude. To warm the atmosphere even more, Zürich Tourism offers hot punch and sweet treats to spectators on Weinplatz — a heartfelt thank-you to Zurich residents for their hospitality throughout the year.
